Hello and welcome to Jamaica! This year is an important academic milestone for some of the children as it marks the final year in Key Stage 1 and, for others, an introduction to KS1 as we continue to work together in a mixed class. There's lots of exciting learning to do this year and I look forward to supporting your child on their journey as we work our way towards Key Stage 2 and progression to the final stage in Key Stage 1
Please find below several key ways to support your child to make this year as successful as possible:
Reading and phonics practise:
Reading is an important skill for your child to master by the end of Key Stage 1 therefore, it is vital that you listen to your child read daily and write a comment in their reading record at least once a week. Reading books and records and should be brought into school every day and will be changed on Mondays and Thursdays.
Phonics takes place every day in school and we ask that you continue to practice phonics sounds at home, especially in Year 1.
Maths and times tables:
Children in Year 2 need to know their 2, 5, 10 and 3 times tables - in order and at random as well as the inverse (division) facts. E.g. 15 ÷ 5 = 3. Please practise these regularly at home with your child.
If in Year 1, please practise counting in 10’s, 5’s and 2’s.
Homework: Year 2 children will receive homework every Thursday, to be returned the following Monday for marking.
Spellings: Spellings will be given to both year groups on a Friday and tested the following Friday morning.
For Year 1, spellings will include a combination of words related to the phase 5 phonics sounds being practiced in class.
Year 2 spellings will include common exception words and words containing key spelling patterns as set out in the Year 2 curriculum.
Please make sure your child's spelling book is brought to school each Friday for their new set of spellings.
P.E:
Lessons will be on Thursday afternoons.
P.E. kits must include: suitable foot wear (plain black trainers or plimsolls), a t-shirt, (in your house colour) and blue shorts or plain dark-coloured tracksuit bottoms (in the winter).
Please ensure your child has the full, correct PE kit in school each week.
Thank you for your on-going support. Should you have any other questions or concerns, or simply wish to discuss your child’s learning, please make an appointment to see me through the office staff or message me on Dojo.
Best wishes,
Mrs Morgan
