Welcome to Nursery – Spain Class

Nursery is a pivotal time in a child’s development, where they begin to build the skills and confidence needed for their school years ahead. In our classroom, children have access to a variety of areas designed to spark creativity and encourage exploration. The role-play area invites imaginative play, while the independent activity trays help strengthen fine motor skills and lay the groundwork for future writing. Creative resources are readily available, empowering children to express themselves and fostering their independence. These hands-on activities are essential for developing the motor control needed for letter formation as they grow.

To support early literacy, our staff deliver Phase 1 Phonics sessions that introduce children to the world of letters and sounds. These sessions are a fun and engaging way to lay the foundation for future reading and writing skills. Each week, the children are introduced to a new sound, with exciting activities to explore and enjoy.

Alongside literacy, we also place a strong emphasis on early mathematics. Each week, children explore a new number and a variety of mathematical concepts, such as counting, shapes, and patterns. Through hands-on activities, they develop an understanding of numbers and begin to make connections with the world around them. These engaging tasks help build their confidence and enthusiasm for mathematics, laying a strong foundation for future learning.

Our Nursery also has a covered free-flow area, ensuring children can access the outdoor space regardless of the weather. The extensive playground includes climbing areas, running spaces, a mud pit, and a sand pit, offering plenty of opportunities for active play and exploration.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum

In Nursery, we follow the EYFS curriculum, which is made up of seven key areas of learning and development. These are split into three prime areas and four specific areas:

    Prime Areas:

    • Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED): Encouraging children’s confidence, independence, and ability to work both individually and in groups.
    • Communication and Language (C&L): Developing speaking and listening skills, allowing children to communicate effectively.
    • Physical Development (PD): Helping children build both fine and gross motor skills, improving coordination and control in movement, and learning how to handle equipment efficiently.

    Specific Areas:

    • Literacy: Supporting early reading and writing skills, including phonics.
    • Mathematics: Helping children explore numbers, shapes, patterns, measurement, and space.
    • Understanding the World (UW): Encouraging children to investigate their environment, community, and use of technology.
    • Expressive Arts and Design (EA&D): Providing opportunities for children to express themselves through art, music, dance, role-play, and storytelling.

    Staying Connected with Tapestry

To keep you connected with your child’s learning journey, we use Tapestry—a fantastic platform that allows us to share updates, photos, and videos of your child’s activities at school. Through Tapestry, you’ll receive regular updates on your child’s progress, and we encourage you to share observations from home as well. Whether it’s a moment of growth in counting, a new story they’ve told, or an adventure they’ve experienced, we love seeing what they’re up to outside of school!

If you have any questions or would like more information, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re always happy to help and look forward to working with you to support your child’s learning and development.

    Kind regards,
    Miss McDonnell (Miss Mac)
